Macro Lenses
Macro (aka micro) lenses are designed to take close up pictures of subjects.
Although they can also be used as normal lenses the auto-focus is typically a lot slower than in non-macro lenses. On the other hand, most macro lenses are extremely sharp and have flat focusing fields that make them ideal for many situations besides closeup photography.
Maximum magnification is rated in terms of a ratio. i.e. image size on the camera sensor vs actual subject size. The most standard macros are 1:1 although some are 1:2 (less magnification). 1:1 is ideal but 1:2 is not a bad compromise for most situations.
